Every Ubud ATV operator offers the same basic choice: ride your own quad bike solo, or share one tandem-style with a partner. It sounds like a minor logistics question, but it actually changes the whole experience.

Solo ATV. You control the throttle, the braking, and the steering yourself, with a guide leading the group and setting the pace. This is the better choice if you want the full "off-road driving" experience rather than being a passenger, and it's the standard option for confident riders or anyone travelling alone who still wants to join the group tour.

Tandem ATV. One person drives, the other rides behind. This works well for couples where one partner is more comfortable driving in mud and uneven terrain, or for anyone who'd rather experience the jungle scenery without managing the bike themselves. It's also usually the lower-cost per-person option, since one bike is split between two riders.

What doesn't change between the two: the route, the guide, the safety gear, and — if you've booked the combo — the tubing segment afterward. The choice is purely about how hands-on you want the ATV half of the day to be.

Our take: if you're at all unsure, tandem is the lower-stakes choice for a first attempt — you still get the full jungle route and the adrenaline of the terrain, just without also learning to control an ATV in mud for the first time simultaneously. Confident riders or anyone who specifically wants the driving experience should go solo.
